Waterbeach Station Relocation

A new development, Waterbeach new settlement, is proposed by RLW Estates Ltd. (RLW) in the large village of Waterbeach that lies between Kings Lynn to the north and Cambridge to the south.

Waterbeach has an existing station which straddles an automatic half barrier level crossing, with the up platform to the south of the road and the down platform to the north of the road.  As part of the development a replacement station is required to the north of the existing station which will provide safety and accessibility improvements over the current station.

The new station at Waterbeach is being developed to allow for expected additional passenger numbers brought about by the Waterbeach new settlement.  At the current time, Waterbeach station serves roughly 5,100 people. After development, it is expected that this number will at least double. With the location of the new development being around 1.6 miles from the current station site, a new station is needed to serve this expanded settlement.

The overall scope of the project is the addition of the new station of two platforms and associated assets to allow for travel via Great Northern and Greater Anglia services to London Kings Cross and London Liverpool Street respectively.  The station is being developed by engineering consultants (WSP) on behalf of RLW, with agreement and acceptance required from Network Rail to progress to the next stage of design.

The location of the station has been specified such that it will be positioned between signals CA236 and CA237, these signals will become platform starting signals.  The proposal for the relocation of the station will move the existing station closer to the Waterbeach new settlement.

How we are delivering the project

Utilising our expert knowledge and vast experience of regulatory processes, NCB’s team are working collaboratively with the client to provide assurance progressively throughout the project’s lifecycle.  By engaging NCB at the GRIP stage 3, it was possible to highlight any compliance issues early which allowed the project adequate time to manage and address the issues and enable safe integration of the new infrastructure and de-risk delivery.
